Listen friends. Here’s the deal. Tomorrow is like Nerd Christmas for people like me and @larryboatright countless others across the tech-aware world. So, if between the hours of noon and 2 CST, we fail to respond to your emails, text messages, urgent phone calls about the “tornado that mowed down your house” or your “trip to the ER” and such, please understand that even if you DID get a hold of us… It would be like speaking to a freshly de-brained zombie victim, unable to hold conversation or focus on a single thing you’d be communicating. So… probably best to wait a few hours.
Have a great day! #apple #timcook #iphone6 #iwatch

Your Love Is Expanding

And as for the outsiders who now follow me, working for me, loving my name, and wanting to be my servants… They’ll be welcome to worship the same as the ‘insiders,’ to bring burnt offerings and sacrifices to my altar. Oh yes, my house of worship will be known as a house of prayer for all people.
(Isaiah 56:6, 8 MSG)

The book of Isaiah contains a some provocative calls by the prophet for the people of Israel to welcome the outsider. It is a bold step forward in history toward a more clear picture of the all-inclusive nature of the Divine.

When I read through the scriptures in light of the current world and cultural events populating my Twitter feed (Israel/Palestine, Fergeson, respected Christians coming out as gay, debates over evolution), it almost seems like we have this tendency hard-wired into our Judeo-Christian lineage to divide, judge, take sides, and then exclude others who look or think differently than us.

This past week, as we encountered this passage in the lectionary, I wrote this song for our community to sing as a response to this scripture and a call to allow these tendencies to be eroded a bit, opening ourselves to a Love that expands the borders and boundaries we put around it for our own lives and the lives of others.

YOUR LOVE IS EXPANDING

(Download chord chart)

Your love is expanding
Your grace is without limits
Your love is like water
So let it wash away our walls

You gather your people
Strangers you call Your children
Your love is inviting
So let the welcome be for all

Open our minds, God
Open our homes
As we receive your daughters and sons
Remind us that we are one
Open our minds, open our homes

We seek you and find you
On and far from this mountain
Your love is like fire
So let it burn away our walls

Open our minds, God
Open our homes
As we receive your daughters and sons
Remind us that we are one
Open our eyes, open our homes

No ocean is too wide
No wall to high too climb
No one is outside of
The reach of God’s great love

No ocean is too wide
No debt unsatisfied
No one is outside of
The reach of God’s great love

Your love is expanding
Your grace is without limits
